The early schools of Buddhism flourished in India, southeast Asia and Ceylon and are called Hinayana schools to distinguish them from the later Mahayana schools that developed in China, Tibet and Japan. Although their methods of training might differ, all schools of Buddhism follow the same basic teachings.
